The first half of October is one of the best-kept arrangements on Hvar, and the second half is the island closing. That is the whole month in a sentence, and the reason the date you pick matters more here than in any other month of the year.
Early October gives you sea at 21–23 °C — warmer than late May — air around 22–24 °C, low rates, wide availability and an island that is effectively empty. What it takes away, gradually and then quickly, is the list of things that are still operating.

The first ten days are the trip
If October is your month, aim at the first third of it. Everything that makes September good is still broadly true, at lower rates and with fewer people, and the machinery has not started shutting down.
The water is the surprise. The Adriatic’s month-long lag behind the air works in your favour all autumn: the sea in early October is warmer than the sea in late May by two or three degrees, despite the air being about the same. The difference is that in May the water is on the way up and in October it is on the way down, which is why one feels like a bonus and the other like a disappointment.
Swimming here in October is a real activity rather than a dare. The wrinkle is that the air cools faster than the sea, so the swim is fine and the ten minutes afterwards are the part you feel — bring a towel you can actually dry off with.

The thing that can undo an October trip
Boat operators close from mid-month, on their own schedules, and not all of them announce it clearly.
The Blue Cave day out of Hvar is the usual casualty. It is a long run west to Biševo and it needs a full boat to be worth running; once the passenger numbers drop, the sailings stop. Pakleni Islands trips last longer because the crossing is ten minutes, but they thin out too, and the water taxis reduce to a skeleton service as the beach clubs on Palmižana close.
So: do not book flights around a specific boat tour in October without confirming with the operator that it is running on your dates. This is the one piece of advice on this page that matters more than the weather.
If a boat day is non-negotiable, the honest answer is to move the trip to the second half of September, which is the same island with the same emptiness and a full service behind it. What October has that the summer does not
The olive harvest. Hvar’s olives come in through October and November, and the island smells of it. Small producers press locally, and the oil you buy in a village in late October was on a tree the week before.
The end of the wine year. September is the grape harvest; October is the quiet after it, when growers have time to talk. A cellar visit now is the least rushed version of it available.

Walking weather with warm water attached. This is the only month that offers both. The Stari Grad Plain in the morning and a swim at Dubovica in the afternoon is a combination that July cannot give you and May cannot either.
Empty roads. The tunnel to Zavala and the south coast, the old ridge road through Brusje and Velo Grablje, the drive east to Jelsa and Sućuraj: all of it without summer traffic.

The ferry timetable turns back
Jadrolinija moves off the full summer schedule during October and towards the winter service. In practice that means fewer catamaran sailings a day and an earlier last departure to Split, which is a planning problem rather than an availability one — nothing sells out, but the boat you assumed would be there in the evening may not be.

When to book an October trip
Later than any other open month, and the thing to book first is not accommodation.
- Confirm the boat tour, if there is one, before anything else. It is the only genuinely scarce thing in October, and it is scarce because it may not exist rather than because it is full.
- Villas and apartments: three to four weeks. Availability is wide and rates are at their lowest.
- Catamaran tickets: a few days. Check the timetable, not the availability.
- Hire car: two weeks.
- Restaurants: worth a call rather than a booking — the question is whether they are open, not whether they have a table.

There is a real answer and it is not close, but October wins on one axis.

Choose September unless price or solitude is the deciding factor. Warmer sea, full service, and the crowds are already gone by the second week.
Choose early October if you want the cheapest version of a functioning island and you are content to swim in 22 °C water rather than 25 °C.
Do not choose late October unless an almost-empty Adriatic island is itself the point — at which stage you are really considering the closed season, which the best time to visit Hvar is candid about. The island shuts from November to April, ferries drop to a skeleton service, and essentially nothing that brings visitors here is running.
