Greek colonists parcelled this plain in 384 BC, and the dry-stone walls they built still frame the same vineyards and olive groves. Cycle it at golden hour — the geometry has not changed in twenty-four centuries.
16th Century
The Venetian fortress above Hvar Town sheltered the entire population during the Ottoman raid of 1571. The climb takes twenty minutes; the view over the harbor and the Pakleni Islands is the finest on the island.
15th Century
South of the harbor, a Renaissance cloister, a museum of sacral art, and a cypress said to be over three hundred years old. Come for the Last Supper canvas; stay for the quietest courtyard in town.

Seasonal Hvar was once Europe's lavender island, and the fields around Velo Grablje and Brusje still turn violet from mid-June to mid-July. Time an inland drive for late June, windows down. The village of Velo Grablje hosts its lavender festival at the start of the season — details land in the Journal each spring.
The Stari Grad Plain is a UNESCO World Heritage agricultural landscape near Stari Grad, laid out by Greek colonists in 384 BC. Its original dry-stone field divisions are still farmed today, mostly with vineyards and olive groves, making it one of the best-preserved ancient landscapes in the Mediterranean.
The climb up from Hvar Town takes about 20 minutes on a clear path. Go late afternoon for the best light and the least heat — the view over the harbor, the Old Town rooftops and the Pakleni Islands from the top is the finest on the island.

Yes — Hvar Town's Old Town, harbor, Fortica Fortress and Franciscan Monastery are all within a 20-minute walk of each other. A car (or a tour) only becomes useful once you want to reach the Stari Grad Plain or the lavender villages inland.
