June is the month to come if you want to do things, and September is the month to come if you want to swim. That is the whole comparison, and it is worth having it clearly before you book either.
June gives you the longest days of the year, an island that is still green, the lavender in bloom, full summer service on the boats and ferries, and accommodation at roughly 40% of what the same room costs in August. What it does not give you is warm water.

The case for June, in four parts
The days are the longest they will ever be. Around the solstice Hvar gets a little over fifteen hours of usable light, with the sun setting past half eight and a long dusk after it. That sounds like a detail until you try to fit a full Pakleni boat day and an evening in the old town into the same day in October and cannot. In June you can take the eight-o’clock boat, swim until five, and still climb to the Fortica for the light.
The island is still green. Hvar is a dry limestone island and by August the interior is bleached. In June the terraces above Sveta Nedjelja, the maquis on the ridge and the Stari Grad plain are all still holding the spring — it looks like a different island, and it photographs like one.
It is genuinely cheap by comparison. A double room around €80 a night against roughly €200 for the same room in the first half of August. Nothing else about the trip changes by a factor of two and a half.

The lavender, properly
Hvar was the lavender island — at its peak in the mid-twentieth century it supplied a serious share of the world’s lavender oil, and the terraces that grew it are still there, most visibly around Velo Grablje and Brusje, the two villages on the old road over the ridge between Hvar Town and Stari Grad.
The practical version:
- Bloom window: mid-June to mid-July. The last week of June is the reliable target.
- Where: the terraces around Velo Grablje and Brusje, both a short drive inland from Hvar Town on the old road rather than the tunnel.
- Velo Grablje holds a lavender festival at the start of the season, which is worth timing a trip around if the dates line up.
- Caveat worth stating: bloom timing moves with the spring, and the surviving fields are a fraction of what the historic photographs show. Fires and depopulation took most of them. Come for the villages and the terraces rather than expecting Provence.
Getting there wants wheels — the villages are on the old ridge road and the bus service is not built for sightseeing. Do you need a car on Hvar works through whether that justifies hiring one for the week.

The sea: the one honest drawback
The Adriatic runs about a month behind the air, which cuts both ways across the season. In September it means the water is still 25 °C when the air has cooled. In June it means the water is 21 °C when the air is 28 °C.
- Early June: 20–21 °C. Swimmable for the committed.
- Mid June: 21–22 °C. Comfortable for most people after a minute.
- Late June: 22–23 °C. Straightforwardly pleasant.
So a June trip built around all-day swimming will feel slightly under-delivered, and one built around boat days, walking, villages and heritage will not. If the water is the entire point, book September instead — that is not a close call.
The other June water note is the maestral, the north-westerly that builds through summer afternoons. It is establishing itself through the month, which is the reason local boat departures are in the morning. Book the early boat.
What June is best for
The Stari Grad Plain. The UNESCO-listed Greek field system outside Stari Grad is flat, exposed and almost entirely shadeless, which makes it an endurance test in August and a genuinely lovely morning in June. Full guide to the plain here.
The Fortica and the old town. Twenty minutes uphill at 28 °C is a walk. At 34 °C it is not.
The south coast. Zavala, Sveta Nedjelja and Ivan Dolac, under the near-vertical vineyard terraces, are at their best before the heat flattens everything. The single-lane tunnel through the ridge deters most visitors in any month.
Wine, in a different mood from September. The growers are not harvesting, so a cellar visit in June is an unhurried conversation rather than a break in the working day.

What is not quite running yet
Very little, but be aware of the edges. Ferries reach the full summer timetable in late May, so early June is fine. A handful of the most seasonal beach bars and some smaller boat operators do not start until the last week of June or the beginning of July. Nothing that would shape a trip is absent — this is a different situation entirely from October, when the boats are closing.
When to book a June trip
June is the best availability of the season, which makes it easy to leave too late and lose the specific property rather than the trip.
- Villas and apartments: three months out for choice; six weeks will still find you something good.
- Catamaran tickets: a week to two weeks is comfortable.
- Boat tours: two to five days, except the early-departure Blue Cave boats.
- Hire car: three to four weeks. The Split fleet is not yet under August pressure.
- Lavender-season accommodation: the last week of June behaves more like July than like early June. Treat it as peak-adjacent.

June or September?
The two shoulder months are the right answer for almost everybody, and they are not interchangeable.

Choose June if the trip is about the island — the plain, the villages, the fortress, the terraces, the lavender — and swimming is a bonus.
Choose September if the trip is about the water.
Choose May if June’s argument appeals but the price matters more than the lavender — same green island, same empty roads, less money, colder sea.
